Shah Mohammed Farid-ud-Din Baghdadi, also known by the honorary title Shah Sahib, was a 17th-century Iraqi Sufi saint renowned for his pivotal role in propagating Islam in the Chenab Valley of Jammu and Kashmir. Born in 1551 AD (1000 Hijri) in Baghdad to Syed Mustafa, a descendant of the esteemed Sheikh Abdul Qadir Jilani, Shah Farid-ud-Din hailed from a lineage deeply rooted in Islamic scholarship and spirituality.

After completing his religious education, Shah Farid-ud-Din embarked on an extensive spiritual journey. He performed the Hajj pilgrimage in Mecca, where he met Sheikh Jalal Ud-din Al-Maghribi, and subsequently traveled to Egypt, encountering Sheikh Mohi Ud-din Qadri. His travels continued through Sindh and Agra, eventually leading him to Kishtwar in 1664 AD (1075 Hijri) at the age of 75.

In Kishtwar, Shah Farid-ud-Din established a monastery and dedicated himself to the propagation of Islam. His teachings emphasized the principles of Tawhid (the oneness of Allah) and the importance of spiritual enlightenment. His efforts led to the conversion of Raja Kirat Singh, the local ruler, who embraced Islam and adopted the name Sa’adat-yar Khan. This significant event marked a turning point in the region's religious landscape, as many of the Raja's subjects followed suit, embracing Islam under Shah Farid-ud-Din's influence.

Shah Farid-ud-Din's legacy continued through his sons, including Shah Asrar-ud-Din, Shah Akhyar-ud-Din, and Shah Anwar-ud-Din, who furthered his mission of spreading Islamic teachings in the region. His descendants played a crucial role in establishing Sufism in the Chenab Valley, fostering a culture of spiritual devotion and communal harmony.

He passed away in 1733 AD in Kishtwar, where his mausoleum, known as Astan Bala, was constructed. This shrine, located approximately one kilometer from the main bus stand in Kishtwar, has become a revered site for devotees. His sons, Shah Akhyar-ud-Din and Shah Anwar-ud-Din, are also buried alongside him at Astan Bala. Another son, Shah Asrar-ud-Din, is interred at Astan Payeen, situated on the southern edge of Parade Ground or Chowgan in Kishtwar.

The annual Urs (death anniversary) of Shah Farid-ud-Din is celebrated with great fervor, attracting thousands of devotees from various faiths. This event underscores the enduring impact of his teachings and the deep respect he commands among followers.
