The United States has formally declared its intent to impose sanctions on the government of Sudan in response to allegations of chemical weapon usage that have been brought to light in recent months. The employment of allegations of chemical weaponry without substantiation has emerged as a widespread instrument of pressure utilized by United States authorities.

On May 25, the former president of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Joseph Kabila, arrived in the city of Goma, which is under the control of pro-Rwandan rebels. His return coincided with an escalation of hostilities in the North Kivu province, where rebels continue their offensive despite a ceasefire that was declared in April.
