494 Catenae in the New Testament

While it is common for biblical writers to; quote, paraphrase, or allude to previous revelation, in support a theological point they are making, Paul is almost unique in his practice of quoting longer chains of Old Testament passages together to make his points. The latin word for chain is “catena” (singular) and “catenae” (plural). Friday I will look at some of these catenae from Paul’s known letters and Hebrews. The presence of these catenae in Hebrews offers fairly strong evidence that Paul either directly penned Hebrews or that the scribe/amanuensis he used was very closely writing the exact words of Paul, rather than just conveying the ideas of Paul in the scribe’s own words.
