July 14, 1965 - Defense Secretary Robert McNamara indicated today that the Administration will consider calling up reservists, extending enlistments, and boosting draft calls if U.S. strength in Vietnam is increased. McNamara told a Pentagon news conference that it “would be reasonable to assume” that all three steps would be taken if additional increases in American troops in South Vietnam are ordered.
The press conference came eight hours before McNamara’s departure for Saigon with Ambassador-designate Henry Cabot Lodge on a week-long fact-finding tour from which decisions on more troop deployments are to be made.
