Two Chinese nationals, Yunqing Jian and Zunyong Liu, face federal charges for allegedly smuggling Fusarium graminearum, a dangerous agricultural pathogen, into the US. The fungus, which causes head blight in wheat, maize, barley, and rice, is considered a potential agroterrorism weapon. US authorities say Liu was caught at Detroit airport in July 2024 with concealed samples, while Jian, a researcher at the University of Michigan, allegedly facilitated the scheme and has ties to the Chinese Communist Party. Texts suggest this wasn’t their first smuggling attempt. FBI Director Kash Patel labelled it a serious threat to national security, and US Attorney Jerome Gorgon called it one of the gravest concerns. The university condemned the alleged actions, stating no Chinese government funding was involved. Jian has appeared in court, while Liu remains in China. The two face charges including conspiracy, smuggling, and visa fraud. This case underscores rising concerns over foreign interference in US food security.
