"First, train in the preliminaries"
-Chikawa Yeshe Dorje, in the Seven Points of Mind Training

Lama Dawa Zangpo’s Commentary:
This is very important in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition, where the preliminaries are providing a context and are reminders to us about very important basic teachings of how we are experiencing our life, and this is a long teaching, but to make it short here, the 1st is we contemplate how precious this life is as a human being, that this is a special opportunity. Secondly, we contemplate impermanence, which is reminding us that this precious life we have can come to an end at any moment and is very fleeting and short. Thirdly, we contemplate cause and effect, which we can call karma, meaning that the way we act and think and speak have consequences, and we should keep mindful of that and act in ways that benefit ourselves and others. Fourthly, the last contemplation of these preliminaries is a very sobering look at the life that we have and the things in this life that we attach to and that we usually believe will bring us happiness, and this contemplation is that because all things are impermanent and changing, that grasping onto these things and putting our hopes in them, and thinking they're going to find us or buy us true happiness is not really true, so that we should live a life with less attachment and a sense of the big picture. These four contemplations are extremely important and very helpful in providing a context for our meditation and spiritual practice.
