Lt. Col. Danny Davis discusses Ukraine's recent use of small drones to attack Russian strategic bomber bases, claiming over 30% of Russia’s cruise missile carriers were damaged, costing around $7 billion. He notes this signifies a major shift in warfare: no location is safe anymore, even deep inside a nation's territory.

He suggests the drones may have been assembled inside Russia with the help of insiders, and launched from nearby locations, making the attacks difficult to detect or stop. While not all strikes were successful, the use of onboard cameras has created powerful propaganda and disrupted internal logistics in Russia.

Davis warns, however, that while these drone strikes are a media and psychological win for Ukraine, they haven’t shifted the actual front-line dynamics—Russia still holds the advantage in places like Kharkiv and eastern Ukraine.

Inside Russia, there's an internal debate about how to respond—between hardliners who want escalation and diplomats seeking negotiation. Davis says Russia still has more advanced weapons it hasn’t used yet and could choose to escalate significantly.

On drone defense, Davis notes Russia usually develops countermeasures quickly. Because it took Ukraine 18 months to plan this operation, it may be a one-time success as Russia adapts. He also warns Ukraine could face similar tactics in return. 3 May 2025
