On May 30, 2025, a truck carrying approximately 70,000 pounds of honeybee hives overturned near Lynden, Washington, releasing around 250 million bees into the area. The accident occurred around 4 a.m. when the driver failed to properly navigate a sharp curve, causing the trailer to tip over.

Local authorities, including Whatcom County sheriff’s deputies and beekeeping experts, responded quickly to rescue and recover the bees. More than two dozen volunteer beekeepers assisted in the recovery efforts, working to rebuild and restore the damaged hives. Nearby roads were closed for a couple of days to allow the bees to return to their hives and to minimize risks to the public.

Although it was initially reported that 250 million bees had escaped, authorities later corrected the figure to approximately 14 million. Honeybees play a crucial role in crop pollination and food production, but they face growing threats due to environmental factors.
