Water Pie Recipe, a simple Depression-era dessert made with minimal ingredients you probably already have at home. Despite the name, it turns into a custard-like, sweet pie with a slightly jelly-like texture.

Old-Fashioned Water Pie
Ingredients:

1 (9-inch) unbaked pie crust

1 ½ cups water

4 tablespoons all-purpose flour

1 cup granulated sugar

5 tablespoons unsalted butter (sliced)

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Pinch of salt (optional)

Instructions:

Preheat Oven:
Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).

Prepare the Crust:
Place the unbaked pie crust in a 9-inch pie plate. Crimp the edges as desired.

Add Water:
Pour 1 ½ cups of water directly into the pie crust.

Mix Dry Ingredients:
In a small bowl, mix the flour and sugar together. Sprinkle this mixture evenly over the water in the pie crust.

Add Butter & Vanilla:
Dot the top with slices of butter and drizzle vanilla extract over everything.

Bake:
Bake at 400°F for 30 minutes, then reduce the temperature to 375°F and bake for another 30 minutes, or until the top is golden and set.

Cool Completely:
Let the pie cool completely at room temperature, then chill in the fridge for a few hours to fully set.

Tips:
It firms up more as it chills.

Tastes great served cold.

Optional: sprinkle with cinnamon or nutmeg before baking for extra flavor.
