India Prepares for War: Inside Operation Shield.

India has stepped up its wartime emergency preparedness with large-scale civil defence mock drills under 'Operation Shield', conducted across Punjab, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Haryana, Jammu & Kashmir, and Chandigarh. These exercises, held on May 31, 2025, simulated air raids, drone attacks, mass evacuations, and blackout scenarios to test real-time emergency responses. Following the deadly April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam that killed 26 civilians, and subsequent Operation Sindoor, these drills aim to ensure coordination among civil, military, and emergency services in high-risk border areas.
Key activities included air raid sirens, simulated fire emergencies, and evacuation drills in key zones such as Srinagar’s Lal Chowk, Amritsar, Jaipur’s Khatipura, and Ahmedabad. Blackouts were enforced in several cities for 10 to 30 minutes, pausing business and vehicular movement, while volunteers acted as injured victims in rescue simulations. Over 10,000 Civil Defence volunteers participated alongside the NCC, NSS, SDRF, Health Department, and local police and fire departments.
This second phase of Operation Shield, previously postponed from May 29, builds on the first phase held on May 7. The Ministry of Home Affairs coordinated the effort, emphasizing India's growing readiness to face cross-border threats from Pakistan. From blackout rehearsals to rapid response drills, Operation Shield marks a critical shift in India’s approach to homeland security and civilian protection.
