"Life is short and the time of death is uncertain, so apply yourself to meditation. Avoid doing evil and acquire merit to the best of your ability, even at the cost of life itself. In short, act so that you have no cause to be ashamed of yourself and hold fast to this rule."
-Milarepa, in the 100,000 Songs of Milarepa

Lama Dawa Zangpo’s Commentary:
Milarepa was a great Tibetan Yogi and spent much of his life practicing in the mountains. He achieved great enlightenment through his efforts. His advice to us here is that we should remember and keep in mind that life is very short and that death can come at any moment. We're never sure when we will die or how long we can live, therefore, as he points out, it's very important to extract the essence of this life as we have the opportunity now. And as he is saying, meditation is very important, very helpful in this journey, and furthermore, he's reminding us of the basic Buddhist teaching of don't do bad things, do good things and try to live a life so that when you do come to the end of our days, you have no regrets and you can face death with confidence.
