Eid al-Adha, also known as the Festival of Sacrifice, is one of the most significant celebrations in Islam. It commemorates the extraordinary act of obedience, faith, and submission to Allah demonstrated by Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him). This event, remembered annually by millions of Muslims around the world, is not just a story of sacrifice — it is a timeless lesson in trusting Allah’s wisdom and surrendering to His will, no matter how difficult the test.
The story begins with a dream. Prophet Ibrahim (AS), a beloved servant of Allah and a man of unwavering faith, saw in his dream that he was sacrificing his son. Being a Prophet, he understood that dreams of this nature were divine commands. The Qur'an tells us in Surah As-Saffat:
Surah As-Saffat Verse 102 “And when he reached with him [the age of] exertion, he said, ‘O my son, indeed I have seen in a dream that I [must] sacrifice you, so see what you think.’ He said, ‘O my father, do as you are commanded. You will find me, if Allah wills, of the steadfast.’”
This verse captures the remarkable submission of both father and son. Isma'il (AS), though young, displayed the same trust and willingness to obey Allah. There was no resistance, no hesitation—only complete surrender. The emotional weight of this moment is profound. A father being asked to sacrifice his beloved child, and a child willingly offering himself for the sake of his Creator—this is the pinnacle of faith and obedience.
As Ibrahim (AS) prepared to carry out Allah’s command, he laid his son down and raised the knife. But before he could carry out the sacrifice, Allah intervened. The Qur'an continues:
Surah As-Saffat verses 104–107 “And We called to him, ‘O Ibrahim, you have fulfilled the vision.’ Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good. Indeed, this was the clear trial. And We ransomed him with a great sacrifice.”
Allah replaced Isma'il (AS) with a ram from Paradise. This was a clear sign that the purpose of the test was not the act of killing, but the willingness to obey Allah without question. Ibrahim (AS) passed the test with flying colors, showing that his love for Allah surpassed even his love for his own child.
This moment is so sacred that it has been prescribed for Muslims to remember it every year during the days of Dhul Hijjah by performing Qurbani — the ritual sacrifice of an animal, such as a goat, sheep, cow, or camel. The meat is then distributed to the poor, relatives, and family members, symbolizing compassion and generosity.
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) emphasized the importance of this act. He said:
Ibn Majah, Hadith 3127 “It is the Sunnah of your father Ibrahim. For every hair of the Qurbani you receive a reward from Allah.”
This Hadith shows how deeply rooted this practice is in Islamic tradition, not as a mere ritual, but as a continuation of a great legacy of submission.
But why is this story so central to Islam? Because it teaches us that true faith is not just in words, but in action. When faced with the hardest test, Prophet Ibrahim (AS) did not question Allah’s wisdom. He trusted that whatever command came from Allah was ultimately for good, even if he couldn’t understand it fully at the time.
Allah also praises Ibrahim (AS) in the Qur'an for his loyalty and devotion:
Surah An-Nahl verse 120 “Indeed, Ibrahim was a [comprehensive] leader, devoutly obedient to Allah, inclining toward truth, and he was not of those who associate others with Allah.”
The essence of Eid al-Adha is to revive this spirit of devotion. It is a reminder to examine our own lives — are we willing to let go of our attachments for the sake of Allah? Are we ready to submit when His commands test our comfort, our desires, or our worldly priorities?
Sacrifice, in its broader meaning, is not limited to the slaughter of an animal. It is the sacrifice of ego, of selfishness, of material obsession — all for the pleasure of our Creator. It is about letting go of anything that stands between us and Allah.
As we celebrate Eid al-Adha, let us remember that this is not just a historical account. It is a personal lesson for each believer. The story of Ibrahim (AS) is a call to action — to be steadfast in faith, to obey without hesitation, and to love Allah above all.
May we all strive to walk in the footsteps of Prophet Ibrahim and Isma'il (peace be upon them), and may Allah accept our sacrifices and grant us the strength to be among those who surrender wholeheartedly to Him. We pray to Allah Almighty to grant every Muslim the ability to perform the Sunnah of the Most High and not to make anyone dependent on any human being. Ameen
Allah Hafiz
