Deep in the forests of the Bohemian foothills, above the town of Bavorov, rise the remains of a once-mighty Gothic stronghold – Helfenburk. This monumental ruin wasn’t just a watchtower on the horizon, but a true seat of power in an age when the sword ruled the law, and stone stood guard against all threats.

The castle was founded around 1355 by the influential Czech noble family of the Rosenbergs, likely by Peter I of Rosenberg. The name "Helfenburk" (literally "Help Castle") comes either from the German word or possibly from a family member named Helfen. Its purpose was clear: controlling trade routes, collecting tolls, and asserting military dominance.

Throughout the 14th and 15th centuries, Helfenburk expanded – double walls, two massive gates, residential palaces, and the iconic round tower, which still stands today. During the Hussite Wars, it became a key stronghold for the Catholic Rosenbergs, with defenses and position that made it nearly impregnable.

But like many castles, Helfenburk fell out of use with the arrival of the Renaissance. It was abandoned in the 16th century and began to decay. By the 19th century, it had become a romantic ruin, attracting artists, pilgrims, and history lovers.

Today, Helfenburk stands as a silent witness to the past, reflecting the power and pride of noble families, as well as the impermanence of time. From above, its silhouette remains majestic – surrounded by deep forests, as if still guarding secrets of centuries gone by.
