Most of the countries in the Pacific Islands and East Timor come to Australia under the Pacific Australian Labour Mobility(PALM) Scheme to work on contract as labours. To work at farms, fishery sectors, and in nursing homes. They do the low labour jobs that Australians do not perform.

In the past there were news of broken families when married people travel to Australia on the PALM scheme and remarried. Hence, several families separated as a result. Also, children of families who travel to Australia got into drugs. These experiences show the examples of social challenges of the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility(PALM) Scheme. It illustrates how people seem to trade health and family for economic gains.
