This Week’s Lesson

We are in Lesson-07 in the series “Rebuilding the Covenant Community” from the book of Nehemiah.

This is Volume II of our series: “After the Exile” a study of Ezra-Nehemiah-Esther.

The lesson is titled “Sanctified in the Truth – Part I” and our focus passage is Nehemiah 7.

Please find your way in your Bible to that passage.

In our previous episode, we concluded our teaching of Nehemiah 5-6, a study we called “Finish What You Start”.

In these two chapters we saw the Jewish Exiles continue their work to finish rebuilding the wall of Jerusalem.

Despite of the mockery and threats, the wall rebuilding project had progressed nicely, but it was not quite finished.

Nehemiah was faced with multiple disruptions to keep him from his high priority task. The enemy’s tactics changed again, and the pressure was intensified.

There was also internal strife threatening the completion of the project.

Despite all of this, the wall was rebuilt in 52 days. The enemies were deflated. Nehemiah stood tall as a strong servant leader.

He confronted distractions directly; he carefully considered his responses; he consistently kept the main thing the main thing; and he completely committed himself and his task to God.

We should always remember that we can remain steadfast and prosper in our kingdom work when we put our full trust in Almighty God.

In today’s lesson we begin our look at Nehemiah 7-8 as Nehemiah takes the next steps in rebuilding the Covenant Community.

Nehemiah’s priority task has been completed. There is now a wall around Jerusalem that provides security and has removed shame from the Jewish Exiles (Neh. 1:1-3).

Nehemiah also dealt with issues of oppression and economic stress and despite the best efforts of some of the Jewish leaders and nobles, the community now had a chance to prosper.

Does that mean his work is done? Hardly. As challenging as the wall rebuilding project was, it only dealt with the external circumstances of the people.

As the walls and gates and the city of Jerusalem itself needed rebuilding, so too the people needed to be rebuilt spiritually.

How is Nehemiah going to accomplish that next task?

Let’s get started.
