𝚃𝚑𝚎 𝙺𝚊𝚛𝚒𝚖𝚘𝙹𝚘𝚗𝚐 𝙻𝚒𝚏𝚎𝚜𝚝𝚢𝚕𝚎

The Karamojong are a Nilotic ethnic group primarily residing in the semi-arid Karamoja region of northeastern Uganda. Their lifestyle is deeply rooted in nomadic pastoralism, where cattle are central to their culture, wealth, and identity. For the Karamojong, livestock (cattle, goats, sheep) are not just a source of food and income, but also hold immense social and cultural importance, used for bride price, rituals, and as a symbol of status.
Due to the arid climate, they often practice transhumance, moving their herds seasonally in search of water and pasture. While cattle rearing is their main livelihood, some also engage in supplementary crop cultivation where possible. They live in communal homesteads called "manyattas," typically enclosed by thorny fences for protection. Men are primarily responsible for herding and protecting livestock, often sleeping near their kraals, while women manage the homestead, raise children, cultivate crops, and prepare meals. The Karamojong maintain a rich oral tradition, ceremonial dances, and a unique social organization based on age systems.
