Changu Island, also known as Prison Island, is a captivating island located a short boat ride from Stone Town, Zanzibar, offering a fascinating blend of history and natural beauty. Though it earned its "Prison Island" moniker from an unfulfilled plan to house rebellious slaves and later a quarantine station for yellow fever, it never actually functioned as a conventional prison. Today, the island is renowned for its sanctuary of Aldabra giant tortoises, some of which are over a century old, allowing visitors the unique opportunity to interact with and feed these magnificent creatures. Beyond its historical ruins and the tortoise sanctuary, Changu Island boasts crystal-clear turquoise waters ideal for swimming and snorkeling amidst vibrant marine life, and pristine white sand beaches perfect for sunbathing and relaxation.
