CHINA: GAZA IS NOT A BARGAINING CHIP

In reiterating China's long-standing commitment to multilateralism, Guo Jiakun, spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, reaffirmed China's support for a two-state solution for Palestine and Israel based on the pre-1967 lines.

'Gaza is not a bargaining chip,' said Guo, invoking China's view of Palestinian statehood as a right, not a concession in the game of short-term geopolitical moves. The remarks arrive at a time when regional actors have placed on the table bids that risk subjecting Palestinian rights to greater strategic realignments, especially following as many as 186,000 deaths between 7 October 2023 and July 2024, according to the Lancet medical journal. 

China's position is in line with international consensus in UN General Assembly resolutions that call on Israel to pull out of the occupied territory and call for an independent Palestinian state, with East Jerusalem as its capital, to exist in peace within secure, recognised borders.
