What is an "Active Agent" of the Lord?

The term "active agent" has multiple definitions and we are going to explore 3 of those definitions in relation to our walk in Christ.

An active agent can be...

• A person who takes action to improve their life

This is someone who believes they can improve their life by taking action, and who has an internal locus of control.

As children of God, we have been given that "internal locus of control" through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. Isaiah 11:2 describes the attributes of the Holy Spirit we have within us as...

"the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of might, the Spirit of the knowledge and fear of the Lord".

Apostle Paul teaches us in 2 Timothy 1:7, "For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline."

Through the indwelling Holy Spirit, we have been given wisdom, understanding, counsel, might, power, love and self-discipline. With these gifts, God has empowered us to be successful in taking action to improve ourselves and our situations...and to make the best of our life.

Another definition of an "active agent" can be...

• A chemical agent that produces chemical reactions

Meaning that this agent actively induces a specific effect or response.

As Christians, we are to make a positive impact upon others that, in turn, brings about a positive effect or response in their life.

Jesus teaches us the foundation of a positive impact in John 13:34-35,

“...Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

We are the light of the world, as Jesus teaches us in Matthew 5:14. And as lights, we have the power to pierce all darkness with love. Even the smallest flicker of light makes an impact in darkness. We might not always witness the outcome, but we planted the seed and God will water it.

Apostle Paul shares in 1 Corinthians 3:6, "I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow."

Through living our lives with outpouring love, we allow the light of Christ to shine out of our earthly vessels and illuminate the lives of those around us.

The final definition of an "active agent" is...

• A molecule or collection of molecules that alters how the body functions

Meaning that it is intended to be active in the body. The active agent may induce the body to do something positive, or block it from doing something potentially harmful.

We read in 1 Corinthians 12:13-27,

[13]...we were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form one body—whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink. [14] Even so the body is not made up of one part but of many…[18]...God has placed the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be. [19] If they were all one part, where would the body be? [20] As it is, there are many parts, but one body...[21] The eye cannot say to the hand, “I don’t need you!” And the head cannot say to the feet, “I don’t need you!”...[26] If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it. [27] Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.

Each one of us is a vital part of the body of Christ. None of us can be independent from the rest of the body. A foot separated from the body is just a foot with no purpose. But as a part of the body, the foot helps the body move in a specific direction. The eyes help the body to see where it is going and warns of obstacles in the way. The arms help to carry the load. Each part is effectual...making an impact as it helps the body do something positive or block it from doing something harmful.

In conclusion, an active agent of the Lord is...

1) one who takes action to improve their self through the power of the Holy Spirit

2) a light in the world who positively impacts and illuminates the lives around them

3) and an active, effectual participant in the body of Christ

God has given us everything we need to be an effective, impactful agent. We only need to be active participants in what He has given us...as we read in 2 Peter 1:3-8,

[3] His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness... [5] For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; [6] and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; [7] and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love. [8] For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
