What Turns Kindness Into Cruelty?

Our friends. Our Neighbors. We love and trust them. We'd fight for them and they'd fight for us. But how and why is it that some of them have a downright cruel streak in them that materializes every once in awhile, and seemingly without it's agent realizing this sudden and concerning shift in behavior?
