Baltimore's murder rate is about 5 times the national average but this crooked lawyer says it's safe
During a congressional hearing that quickly went viral, Republican Representative Bandon Gill bluntly confronted a top Baltimore official, Major Franklin, over his claim that the city is “safe,” despite data showing a vastly different reality. Baltimore has a homicide rate five times the national average and faces crime statistics that place it among the most dangerous cities in the United States.
The tense exchange began when Gill asked directly, “Would you describe Baltimore as a safe city?” Rather than answering clearly, Franklin deflected with, “What’s your definition of safe?” Gill pressed on: “Is it the kind of city where you’d want to raise a family and maybe go for a run without worrying about being murdered or raped?”
Franklin insisted that Baltimore is indeed safe, citing that his mother still lives there. But Gill pushed back with hard facts: the homicide rate in Baltimore is around 35 per 100,000, about five times the national average. The robbery rate is 8.4 times higher, and assaults are 3.4 times more frequent than the national norm.
“Does that sound like a safe city to you?” Gill asked. Franklin responded, “Safe for me and my family.” That answer was as alarming as it was revealing: an official willing to ignore objective data and cling to a personal perception while thousands of families live under the constant threat of crime.
Gill delivered the knockout line: “I don’t think if you get murdered it matters how you feel, does it?” For the congressman, public safety isn’t about feelings—it’s about facts. And the facts clearly show a city overwhelmed by crime, mismanaged by leaders more willing to deny reality than confront it with decisive action.
This exchange not only exposes the disconnect between progressive officials and everyday citizens but also highlights how the left’s “safe city” narrative collapses under the weight of real-world statistics. Baltimore doesn’t need excuses or relativism—it needs leadership, accountability, and a strong law-and-order approach.
