Lama Dawa Zangpo’s Commentary:
The Buddha here is pointing out that everything that appears to us in the world is not as substantial as they appear at first glance, and we take our world to be very solid and very real and yet the Buddha is suggesting here that we can look differently and actually start to understand that everything due to its impermanent nature is like a flash of lightning or dew in the morning, they are here for about a moment and then they pass away and they're not even real as we examine them more closely. So, therefore, he says, they can be like an illusion or a dream, things that appear real to our senses, and yet when we wake up from our dream, we realize it was just something that was occurring in our mind and not in so-called reality. This helps us lessen our attachment to things, and by not taking things quite so solidly and seriously, we can navigate life more gracefully.
