Tripping on Travel: Saltmarsh Pond Boat Launch, Gilford, NH

On May 17, 2025 I saw Saltmarsh Pond on a phone map while I was visiting New Hampshire. I decided to check it out. According to the Snoflo website, the pond is 87 acres in size and has a maximum depth of 35 feet. It also points out there is a "single-lane concrete boat ramp located in Gilford, New Hampshire that services Saltmarsh Pond. It is approximately 10 feet wide and is suitable for smaller watercraft", such as the canoes seen lined up on the shoreline. Gas-powered watercraft is not permitted. And "all boats must have a valid New Hampshire registration or a non-motorized boat launching permit". The folks at Fishbrain inform us that the pond is popular for fishing Brook trout, Rainbow trout, and Rock bass. Birding Hotspots informs us that the pond is just north of the Saltmarsh Pond State Forest, and that 71 species of birds have been sighted there.

Unlike some other sites I have visited with my camera, the environment there was without the sounds of traffic, nor planes overhead and without any hint of nearby development. Outside of the voices of people I saw fishing from the shoreline from the opposite side of the boat launch, it was very quiet. There were a lot of spring frogs heard, a sound I consider a soothing one to hear. The terrain into the woods, where I neither saw, nor heard, any people, was nonetheless too difficult for me to walk on. So I stayed primarily at the boat launch.
