It Came Upon the Midnight Clear

In 1849, Edmund Sears wrote a five-stanza poem for his church in Wayland, Massachusetts. The tune with which we are familiar was not composed until 1874 by Arthur Sullivan. Once it was set to music, the verses became widely popular, and by the early 1900's it had spread through carols to every corner of the world. Merry Christmas!
