US Secretary of State Announces Sanctions on Officials That Could Target Moraes

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced on Wednesday (28) new sanctions on foreign officials and a new visa restriction policy. The measure could impact Alexandre de Moraes, a Justice of the Brazilian Supreme Federal Court, who was already the subject of possible actions by the Trump administration.

On X, Rubio stated that the new policy will apply to officials and "accomplices in the censorship of Americans. Freedom of speech is essential to the American way of life – an inherent right that foreign governments have no authority over."

According to the Secretary, Americans have long been "fined, harassed, and even prosecuted by foreign officials for exercising their freedom of expression rights."

Now, foreigners who, in Rubio’s view, work to undermine Americans' rights will no longer have the "privilege of traveling to the United States." "Whether in Latin America, Europe, or elsewhere, the days of passive treatment for those who work to undermine the rights of Americans are over," he wrote.
