How To Trim Cockatiel Nails

Recorded through the TikTok app.

I was asked how to trim a cockatiel's nails so I thought I'd make a short video.

It is a good idea to get your cockatiel and any other breed of bird, desensitized to a towel first.

Toweling is important to learn in case of an emergency and for doing grooming at home.

In the event that you may need to take your bird to an avian vet they tell you upfront that they use a towel to restrain your bird in order to examine them. It is the same when you take your bird to the groomers.

Before I started grooming Lord Luka at home I watched a ton of videos on YouTube. I watched them over and over again before I attempted to do it at home with the help of my husband.

You want to get yourself small nail clippers that are for cats and bunnies. Just like you see in this video. Before you begin, make sure that you have some q-tips, a small cup of water and some quick stop styptic powder, ready. This is so you are prepared to stop any bleeding from cutting a nail too short. Birds nails are just like human nails and if you cut into the quick they will bleed.

It is important to stop the bleed quickly by dipping the q-tip in water, dip it into the quick stop and then put it directly on the tip of the nail.

You will clip a nail too short, it happens, especially if you are just learning. It will take time to not make any mistakes, but even then, no one is perfect. Just be careful and have someone available that can help you. My husband trims my cockatiel's nails while I restrain him.

I hope this helps.
