Psa 44:18
Our heart has not turned back, And our steps have not deviated from Thy way,
Psa 44:19
Yet Thou hast crushed us in a place of jackals, And covered us with the shadow of death.
Psa 44:20
If we had forgotten the name of our God, Or extended our hands to a strange god;
Psa 44:21
Would not God find this out? For He knows the secrets of the heart.
Psa 44:22
But for Thy sake we are killed all day long; We are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.
The Psalmist expresses the price of loyalty to Elohim in a world at war with Him. This was quoted by Paul (Romans 8:36). Sometimes difficulties are His desire for His people.

The water of the river is symbolic of the Spirit of the Father
Psa 46:4
There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, The holy dwelling places of the Most High.
Psa 46:4: In the midst of praising Elohim for deliverance, the Psalmist makes Messianic reference to His redeemed people (the city of Elohim). The river is said to make glad the City of Elohim (Rev. 22:1). The water of the river is symbolic of the Spirit of the Father Isa 44:3, Ezek. 36:25-27).
