Thierry Henry, one of Arsenal’s greatest legends, has made headlines again—not for his magic on the pitch, but for his brutally honest words about the current state of the club. In a recent interview, Henry did not hold back as he criticized Arsenal and manager Mikel Arteta for what he sees as consistent underachievement despite huge investments and a promising squad.
Arsenal fans had high hopes for the 2024–2025 season. With the Premier League title seemingly within reach over the past few years, this season was supposed to be different. But once again, Arsenal ended the campaign trophyless. They finished second in the Premier League for the third consecutive time. This time, they fell short behind Liverpool. And according to Thierry Henry, it’s not just about finishing second. It’s about failing to bring home silverware when the team has the potential and the resources to do so.
Henry pointed out that even Manchester United, who have faced their fair share of criticism, have managed to reach five finals and win two trophies in the same period. That contrast highlights the real issue for Arsenal—consistently falling short on the biggest stages. Henry’s frustration echoes that of the fans. The Emirates Stadium has seen moments of brilliance, but those moments haven’t translated into trophies, and for a club of Arsenal’s stature, that’s simply not good enough.
This season, multiple factors contributed to Arsenal’s downfall. The transfer window, for one, was a major letdown. Arsenal missed out on signing Benjamin Sesko, and a bid for Ollie Watkins was rejected. The lack of a top striker became painfully evident as the season progressed. Gabriel Jesus suffered an ACL injury, Bukayo Saka was out for three months with a hamstring issue, and Martin Odegaard also spent time on the sidelines. Injuries ravaged the squad, but that’s not the full story.
Behind the scenes, there was more drama. Sporting director Edu suddenly resigned in November, leaving a major gap in Arsenal’s leadership during a critical part of the season. His replacement, Andrea Berta, was only appointed in late March. That delay in filling such an important role likely impacted Arsenal’s ability to respond effectively to challenges on and off the pitch.
Despite all this, there were a few bright spots. Midfielder Mikel Merino unexpectedly stepped up with a surge of goals. But it wasn’t enough to cover up the cracks. From poor transfer strategy to injury mismanagement, Arsenal’s season slipped away yet again.
Now, as the pressure mounts on Mikel Arteta, the club is already planning for next season. Arsenal is aggressively pursuing reinforcements. Reports suggest they’ve submitted a formal offer for Viktor Gyokeres and are in talks with RB Leipzig for Benjamin Sesko. There’s also interest in Kaoru Mitoma from Brighton, seen as a potential alternative to Real Madrid’s Rodrygo. In goal, Arsenal might even consider bringing back former keeper Emi Martinez if David Raya decides to move to Spain.
But no matter how big the signings or how impressive the squad looks on paper, Thierry Henry’s message is clear. It’s time for accountability. Fans are running out of patience. The club’s resources and potential are not being turned into trophies, and that’s the bottom line.
Arsenal legend Ian Wright also joined the conversation, slamming the men’s team for their lack of silverware. He praised the Arsenal Women’s team, who won the Champions League and brought pride back to the club. Wright even called for a celebratory parade in their honor, saying they saved the club from embarrassment.
As Arsenal prepares for another season, the expectations are higher than ever. It’s been 21 years since their last Premier League title. Thierry Henry, like many fans, wants to see real change—not just in attitude, but in results. The upcoming transfer window could be a turning point, but only if the club gets it right.
