The bacterium, named Niallia tiangongensis in honor of the station, is a relative of a soil-dwelling bacterium from Earth, writes the Daily Mail.

However, researchers have discovered that this unique bacterium has developed special adaptations that help it survive in space. This includes specialized genes that help repair damage caused by the intense radiation found outside of Earth's atmosphere.
