Leviticus 23

Introduction: The Appointed Feasts (v.1–2)

God calls these feasts His appointed times, not man-made traditions.

They are holy convocations—set times of gathering, rest, and worship.

The Sabbath (v.3)

Weekly day of rest and worship.

Pattern of ceasing work and focusing on God’s holiness.

Passover and Unleavened Bread (v.4–8)

Passover (14th of Nisan): Commemorates God’s deliverance from Egypt.

Unleavened Bread (15th–21st): Week-long feast emphasizing purity (leaven = sin).

Firstfruits (v.9–14)

Celebrates the first harvest.

A sheaf is waved before the Lord, symbolizing trust in future provision.

Foreshadows Christ’s resurrection (1 Cor. 15:20).

Feast of Weeks / Pentecost (v.15–22)

Held 50 days after Firstfruits.

Celebrates the full harvest and giving of the Law at Sinai.

In the New Testament, Pentecost marks the giving of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2).

Feast of Trumpets (v.23–25)

Begins the seventh month with a trumpet blast.

Day of rest and spiritual awakening.

Points forward to Christ’s return.

Day of Atonement (v.26–32)

A solemn day of fasting and repentance.

High priest enters the Holy of Holies.

Symbolizes Jesus’ ultimate atonement (Hebrews 9–10).

Feast of Tabernacles / Booths (v.33–44)

Week-long feast remembering Israel’s wilderness journey.

People live in booths to recall God's provision and presence.

Also anticipates God dwelling with His people eternally (Revelation 21:3).

Key Themes:
God is the Lord of time – He defines sacred rhythms in life.

Worship is communal and celebratory – Involving family, rest, and feasting.

Each feast reflects God’s character – His deliverance, provision, and desire for fellowship.

Prophetic significance – Many of these feasts point directly to Christ.

Application for Today:
Prioritize rest and spiritual rhythm – Like the Sabbath, regular time with God is essential.

Celebrate God’s faithfulness – Remembering what He has done builds trust and gratitude.

Live in the fullness of Christ – Jesus is the fulfillment of the feasts; embrace the gospel reality they point to.

Be prepared for His return – Like the Feast of Trumpets, we should live expectantly.
