Britain's King Charles III and his wife, Queen Camilla, arrived in Ottawa on Monday for a historic official visit, where they were welcomed by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Governor General Mary Simon. The two-day visit will include the official opening of Canada's parliament and meetings with grassroots organizations and citizens, according to AFP.

This is Charles III's first official visit to Canada as monarch. He previously traveled as Crown Prince of the United Kingdom with Queen Camilla in May 2022 to the provinces of Newfoundland and Labrador, Ontario and the Northwest Territories to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the accession of the late Queen Elizabeth II, a trip that had a particular focus on reconciliation with Indigenous communities.

AFP quoted political analysts as saying that the British monarch's recent visit is a symbolic response to US President Donald Trump's controversial remarks about the possibility of Canada joining the United States.
