The Sumatran orangutan is one of three species of orangutan, which are among the largest tree-dwelling mammals in the world. This species is endemic to the island of Sumatra in Indonesia, where it inhabits tropical rainforests, mainly in the Leuser Ecosystem. The Sumatran orangutan is smaller and slimmer than its Bornean relative, with lighter reddish fur and more prominent beards, especially in males. It is known for its high intelligence and ability to use tools, which demonstrates its adaptability and complex social behavior. This species is critically endangered, mainly due to deforestation, illegal hunting, and the expansion of palm oil plantations, which are destroying its natural habitat. The protection of the Sumatran orangutan is crucial for the preservation of biodiversity in the area where it lives.
