The European Union has placed Nigeria on a priority watch list for repeated intellectual property violations, alongside countries like China and Turkey. Nigerian seaports are flagged as major transit hubs for counterfeit pharmaceuticals, electronics, and fashion goods, mostly manufactured in China and shipped through West Africa to Europe. In 2023, EU customs seized 17.5 million counterfeit items worth nearly $870 million (811 million euros). Despite Nigeria’s efforts, including new intellectual property policies, enforcement gaps persist, raising economic and public health risks.
