Unfortunately for the widow Stoker, after Bram's death, Dracula became her problem. Not only as his heir, Florence Balcombe Stoker became the literary executor of the Stoker estate, and she faced a time, as egregious as what happened with modern piracy, where literary works were regularly copied and stolen.
With the success of a novel like Dracula that captured the public imagination, it wasn't only printed pages she had to worry about. One extraordinary fight occurred with Nosferatu, F.W. Murnau's infamous theft of the Dracula property. Through arduous litigation, Florence managed to quash the silent film with orders to destroy it in its entirety.
However, copies did escape the incinerators, and this influential film took on a life of its own creating vampire imagery that persists to this day.
