10 US States That Might Leave for Canada and Why

Things are a little... chaotic in the U.S. lately. You’ve probably heard the wild headlines: “Should the U.S. buy Canada?” “Take over Greenland?” “Reclaim the Panama Canal?” But here’s one that’s been bubbling under the surface for years—what if states actually started breaking up with America?

It’s not as crazy as it sounds. Texas has been flirting with secession since before it was trendy. But picture this—what if Minnesota just up and peaced out? Moved the border 10 miles south of Albert Lea because they decided they’d rather have cheaper prescription meds, universal healthcare, and Tim Hortons than fireworks and AR-15s?

So, would people really be down for this?

To find out, we ran a nationwide survey asking 500 people in every state: “Would you want your state to leave the United States and join another country?” And if so, where would they go—Canada, Mexico, Japan, Greenland, or maybe somewhere in the EU?

Now, full transparency: a few states didn’t get enough responses (looking at you Alaska, Louisiana, Connecticut, and West Virginia), so they didn’t make the cut. Everyone else? Ranked by how many people out of 500 said “Yeah, let’s leave America.”
