Can a chainsaw and a beer mug teach you about control under pressure?

At first glance, the "Cookie Stack" sounds like a dessert contest. But step into the woods with the UM Woodsmen, and you'll see something different: the real Cookie Stack—an elite timber sports event that puts raw power and unbelievable finesse on full display.

Held at historic Fort Missoula during the 2025 UM Woodsmen Pro/Am, the Cookie Stack tests competitors with this brutal task: balance a mug full of water atop a vertical log. Then, using a roaring chainsaw, slice off three perfect wooden discs—or "cookies"—without disturbing the mug. The final step? Use only the chainsaw bar to lift all three stacked cookies and set them—with the mug still intact—onto another log.

It's thrilling, intense, and yes—there's often speculation that beer was once used instead of water, adding even more drama to an already white-knuckle event. While we couldn't confirm that piece of folklore, the spirit of the lumberjack lives on strong here.

The crowd at Fort Missoula erupted when one pro completed the challenge without spilling a drop. And HINESight Entertainment was there, proud to support the athletes, students, and tradition that keep this sport alive.

So, the next time you think of balancing work and life, remember: someone in Montana is balancing a mug of water—with a chainsaw.

Have you ever tried doing that with your morning coffee?
