Order and Discipline

Sermon on 1 Corinthians 5 - reading from Belgic Confession Article 32 - Lords Day May 25th, 2025 - Trinity Reformed Church

The elders and minister has a responsibility is to serve you in love, to protect you from error, to see that Gods commands are obeyed by you. Discipline is required to bring about order in the church. The purpose of discipline is to keep order.

To protect the church from sin. Sin left unchecked can and often spreads. A little leaven spoils the whole. To protect the testimony of the Church. To maintain harmony and unity in the church. Purge out the old leaven. Clean it out completely. They are to judge. Verse 3, V4 they are to judge as well. V5 deliver to Satan.. V11 a professing Christian who is openly sinning we are not to even eat with women.. V12 - put away from yourselves and evil person.

Where 2 or 3 are gathered is for discipline.

1 Corinthians 5:6 (NKJV) Your glorying [is] not good. Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump?

"For where two or three have gathered together in My name, I am there in their midst."" ‭‭Matthew‬ ‭18‬:‭20‬ ‭NASB1995‬‬

1 Corinthians 5:13 (NKJV) But those who are outside God judges. Therefore "put away from yourselves the evil person."
