"The most fundamental aggression to ourselves, the most fundamental harm we can do to ourselves, is to remain ignorant by not having the courage and the respect to look at ourselves honestly and gently."
-Pema Chodron, in her book When Things Fall Apart

Lama Dawa Zangpo’s Commentary:
Pema Chodron offers us a interesting perspective here, and tells us that the courage to look at ourselves with honesty is the way that we can change and improve our situation, our lives. That fundamental harm, as she puts it, is through remaining ignorant, and by not having the courage that we do have. So again, taking responsibility and courageously looking at oneself with honesty is, and without judgment, this is the way that we can transform ourselves and move forward on our spiritual journey.
