Uranium Ural

The Ural nuclear icebreaker is powered by two RITM-200 pressurized water reactors, each generating 175 megawatts of thermal energy, collectively providing about 60 megawatts of electric propulsion power.

These compact, modular reactors use low-enriched uranium fuel and are designed for high efficiency, long refueling intervals (up to 7 years), and enhanced safety features like passive cooling systems.

Integrated directly into the ship’s structure, the RITM-200s are smaller and lighter than their predecessors, allowing for a shallow draft and high maneuverability, critical for navigating thick Arctic ice up to 3 meters thick.
