Did Jesus observe easter or Passover
Easter eggs, bunnies, and sunrise services—but what if Jesus never kept Easter at all? Let's dig into Scripture and history to uncover what God actually commanded—and what man created.

In this video, we examine the origins of Easter and its contrast with Passover, exploring how Scripture reveals a powerful truth often overshadowed by tradition. While many Christians celebrate Easter Sunday with sunrise services, egg hunts, and ham dinners, Jesus Himself observed the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread—not a holiday named after a spring goddess.
This topic taps into deep currents of biblical accuracy, Easter history, Passover symbolism, Christian traditions, and pagan influence. Through verses like Exodus 12, Luke 22, and 1 Corinthians 5, we trace how Christ's sacrifice fulfilled the Passover—not Easter. We'll break down where symbols like rabbits and eggs came from (hint: not the Bible), why the timing of Easter moves around, and how Constantine's influence formalized Easter in the 4th century by merging Christian resurrection beliefs with pagan spring rites.
So how did we go from unleavened bread and the Lamb of God to jellybeans and marshmallow chicks? God calls His people to worship in spirit and in truth (John 4:23-24). That means asking hard questions: Are our worship practices rooted in Scripture—or just repetition? Are we following God's commands or man-made traditions?
As Jesus reminded the Pharisees in Matthew 15, “You cancel the word of God for the sake of your own tradition.” That cuts deep. Many believers inherited holidays like Easter without question. But now, with open Bibles and open hearts, we can explore what Jesus actually did. He kept the Passover, saying, “I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you” (Luke 22:15). The Greek word used is Pascha, not Easter.
Even Paul in 1 Corinthians 5 called Christ “our Passover Lamb” and encouraged believers to keep the feast. The early church didn't hold Easter services—they remembered the Lamb by celebrating what was commanded in Scripture.
Easter, as commonly celebrated, finds no footing in the Bible. Its origins stem from the Anglo-Saxon goddess Eostre, tied to fertility and the spring equinox, where eggs and rabbits symbolized new life. Over time, these symbols were absorbed into Christian practices—not by Jesus or the apostles, but through religious syncretism and Roman imperial influence.
The Passover, however, is God-ordained. Exodus 12 calls it a "law for all time" and a sign of God’s covenant people. Hebrews 10 reminds us the old sacrificial system pointed to Christ—He was the fulfillment, not a replacement.
💡 Truth vs. Trend
Truth: Jesus kept Passover, not Easter.
Trend: Modern Christianity often elevates Rome’s tradition over God’s command.
🪞 Corrective but Compassionate Moment
This isn’t about finger-pointing. Most of us grew up with Easter baskets, bunny ears, and chocolate crosses. But what if God is inviting us to look again—deeper, clearer, and with more courage? I used to celebrate Easter, too—until I studied Scripture and history. You don’t have to throw everything out. But what if the better thing is also the biblical thing?
✨ Ask yourself:
– Am I observing this because of tradition or truth?
– Does my worship reflect what Jesus actually did?
– Would I follow Christ even if it means going against the crowd?
Worship isn’t about popular opinion or cultural comfort—it’s about honoring God as He asks. That starts with Scripture, not springtime rituals.
Safety Tips (Spiritual Context):
Approach this topic with humility and prayer. Studying tradition versus truth can stir emotion. Always measure beliefs against God’s Word, and be gentle with others who may be on a different part of the journey.
