Canada Slashes Study Permits For Foreign Students, India Sees A 31% Drop | Spotlight | N18G

In a major setback for the study-abroad hopefuls, Canada has imposed a sharp cut in the intake of its international students. The Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has capped the number of study permits for international students to 437 thousand this year, down from the target of 485 thousand. These capped figures will also be followed through 2026. Ottawa's limited intake is part of a broader policy to reduce the inflow of foreign nationals in the country in response to housing unaffordability and pressure on health and transport infrastructure. These policy changes have impacted the Indians the most, as only a little over 30 thousand Indian students managed to get study permits in the first quarter of 2025. The figures reflect a 31% decline from over 44 thousand study permits issued in the same period last year. India has been Canada’s largest student source market since 2018.
