A new study suggests that AI might be more empathetic than trained mental health professionals. Led by Dariya Ovsyannikova, a lab manager at the University of Toronto’s ( @uoft ) psychology department, researchers found that participants rated AI-generated responses as more compassionate than those from licensed therapists.

Unlike human counselors, AI doesn’t burn out or lose objectivity. It picks up subtle emotional cues, remains consistent, and draws from vast datasets of empathetic language. But what does it mean when users feel more seen by a machine than by a human? And what are the implications for privacy, trust, and the future of mental health care?
