Berlin Heart

The Berlin Heart is a paracorporeal ventricular assist device (VAD) designed for patients with severe heart failure, often used as a bridge to transplant.

Its infrastructure includes an external pneumatic driver unit that powers silicone blood pumps connected to the patient via cannulae inserted into the heart and great vessels.

The system operates by alternating air pressure to mimic the heart’s natural pumping action, offering precise control over stroke volume and rate.
