A timeline of events leading up to February 21, 1965 that illustrates how Malcolm X was not longer just a threat to Elijah Muhammad and the Nation of Islam, but was now a threat to the United States government.

His criticisms of capitalism, his alliance with socialist revolutions and socialist revolutionaries, his airing of America's dirty laundry with respect to race relations, his proposal (with the support of African countries) to charge the US with genocide before the United Nations, his efforts to unite the disparate civil rights organizations in the US into a single civil rights movement, and his reconciliation with Martin Luther King, had transformed a local leader of an extremist civil rights splinter organization into an international Black Messiah, something J. Edgar Hoover was already on record stating he would do everything in his power to prevent.
