Petro in Barranquilla: Delay and Controversy Undermine His Credibility
On May 18, 2025, the president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, became the center of a new controversy that once again raised questions about his ability to lead and represent the nation with the seriousness the office demands. During an open forum held in the city of Barranquilla, the president arrived more than six hours late, causing frustration and annoyance among the hundreds of attendees who waited under the burning sun, eager to hear the speech that would shape part of the country’s political direction.
The tardiness was not the only source of controversy. During his delayed intervention, the president launched harsh attacks against the traditional political class and fiercely defended his social reform agenda, which remains deeply divisive among Colombian society. However, more than the content, it was his behavior that drew attention and criticism on social media and in the press. Many observers noted erratic behavior, irregular speech, and unusual body movements, quickly sparking rumors that the president might have been under the influence of alcohol during the public event.
This is not new for Gustavo Petro. Throughout his term, and even during his presidential campaign, he has faced similar allegations questioning his physical and mental state during official appearances. While there have been cases where evidence showed videos and audios were manipulated for political purposes, the recurring nature of these incidents raises serious concerns about the public perception of his leadership.
The six-hour delay in Barranquilla, combined with the president’s conduct during the forum, not only damaged his image but also overshadowed the political message he intended to convey at a critical moment for his agenda. Barranquilla, an important urban and economic center, was the perfect stage to strengthen his base and pressure Congress to approve his reforms. However, the disorganization and the president’s demeanor generated a sense of disrespect toward the citizens who attended with legitimate expectations.
This significant delay and subsequent criticism expose a deeper issue within Petro’s administration: the difficulty in projecting an image of authority and stability. In a highly polarized political and social environment, the president should be a figure of seriousness and commitment, capable of inspiring trust both domestically and internationally. Yet, frequent controversial episodes weaken this perception and fuel the narrative of his opponents, who eagerly use every mistake to question his fitness to govern.
It is important to understand that the public image of a political leader is directly linked to a country’s institutional stability. When a president appears vulnerable or out of control, trust in the institutions he represents can quickly erode. In Colombia, a nation facing significant security, economic, and social challenges, leadership credibility and stability are essential for governance and progress.
Furthermore, the Barranquilla episode has had international repercussions, especially among conservative and Republican circles in the U.S., who view with concern the direction of one of their strategic allies in the region. For many, Petro’s image as an impulsive and unreliable leader reinforces the perception that Colombia is under a radical political influence, with unpredictable consequences for regional politics and U.S. interests.
Meanwhile, Petro’s administration has attempted to downplay the controversy, citing logistical and weather-related issues as reasons for the delay and denying any speculation about the president’s condition. However, these explanations have failed to convince a skeptical public and an opposition eager to capitalize politically on any opportunity.
In this context, it is essential for the president and his team to reflect on the importance of clear, punctual, and respectful communication with the public. Political legitimacy is built not only with proposals and speeches but also with actions demonstrating responsibility, respect, and commitment to the people.
The Barranquilla incident serves as a wake-up call highlighting the need to strengthen government structures and improve the presidential image to prevent similar incidents from further undermining Colombia’s political and social stability. The trust of Colombians in their president must be a priority, especially in times of crisis and polarization.
In conclusion, Gustavo Petro’s tardiness and behavior during the open forum in Barranquilla reflect the current difficulties in maintaining a strong and reliable presidential image. Beyond the controversy, this episode underscores the urgent need for leadership that projects seriousness and stability—indispensable values to face Colombia’s challenges and preserve trust in the country’s democratic institutions.
