Discovering Traditional Filipino Games As A Foreigner: Kadang-Kadang

One of my favorite things about living in the Philippines is discovering traditional games that I never experienced growing up.

Today we got to see (and try!) a classic called kadang-kadang — which means "simple play." It's an outdoor game where kids (and adults!) walk and race using bamboo or wooden stilts. You see these everywhere from the farms to the heart of the city.

Back in the USA, I grew up at a time when kids still played outside from dawn until well past dark. We invented all kinds of games and toys, but stilts like these were not something I ever really saw. It’s so cool to see how creativity and simple materials can bring so much joy here.

Every time I experience something like this, it reminds me how universal the spirit of play really is. 🌿🇵🇭
