Humanity, for the most part, was as usual, unaware. No apparent psycher abilities. No obvious magic. Unwilling to accept nanite reconstitution. Primitive, the skeptics thought. Lowly, according to the ignorant.
The enemies of man knew better. Where humanity trod, they brought their dread gods. Fell abominations, walking through shadows of eternity, unknowable, unloved, unworshipped.
They bore names, written in gold, in every language, graven into their skin. All meant the same thing. "Death."
The true terror that they brought, beyond all this? These gods, Death, loved, and were utterly devoted to humanity. They would turn aside bullets at the last moment. Wounds would be just barely too shallow to kill. Radios would have just enough signal to reach rescuer's ears. Tiny things, to the unobservant. Enough to ensure humanity's unstoppability when taken as a whole.
The Kaldari worshiped these gods of humanity, seeking their favor. If they were fortunate, they were ignored.
The Frasians, semi-ethereal, fled before them, seeking the far end of the universe. Their last message before the last disappeared was in an Eldritch tongue, it's meaning different to each who heard it once. Everyone who heard it twice fled, following the Frasians.
Only the Kin, deathworlders like humanity, animalistic, but elevated millenia ago, were unbothered. They alone loved humanity, and humanity alike loved them as their own. When asked about the gods that walk in humanity's congregations, they only reply, "Alike, they are, and friends. Is it strange that the shadows of life, would be friends with the avatars of death?"
