Trump ordered the lights in the Oval Office dimmed to show a disturbing five-minute video showing evidence of crimes against humanity. Trump, who said he personally hadn't decided whether to use the word "genocide," said that thousands of white South Africans were seeking refugee status in the United States and that he wanted to save lives.

Footage shown at the meeting showed left-wing populist leader Julius Malema calling for the murder of members of South Africa's 4.5 million white community, which makes up about 7.3% of the population, and a roadside memorial allegedly erected for dozens of murdered white farmers.

"The revolution demands that killing will happen at some point," Malema said in one clip, and several others show the Economic Freedom Fighters leader dancing in packed stadiums while singing, "Kill the Boers, the farmers!"

In other recordings, Malema, who was expelled from Ramaphosa's African National Congress party in 2011, proclaimed, "We will cut the white people's throats!"

Ramaphosa, 72, remained calm, collected, and polite during the more than hour-long press briefing, considering the content of the video. "What you saw, the speeches that were made, that is not the policy of our government," Ramaphosa emphasized. "Our government policy is completely contrary to what [Malema] said."
