Today, we remember the life and legacy of Congressman Gerry Connolly, a long-serving Democratic representative from Virginia’s 11th District, who passed away on May 21, 2025, at the age of seventy-five. His death followed a battle with esophageal cancer, a diagnosis he had publicly shared in late 2024. Surrounded by family, Connolly died peacefully at his home in Fairfax County, Virginia.
Gerry Connolly dedicated over three decades of his life to public service, becoming a respected figure both in Northern Virginia and on Capitol Hill. Before entering Congress, he made a significant mark at the local level. He served on the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, eventually rising to the position of chairman. During his tenure, he played a crucial role in transforming the region into a thriving technology and business hub. His focus on infrastructure, innovation, and inclusive growth helped lay the foundation for a more modern and connected Northern Virginia.
Connolly’s path to national politics began in 2008, when he was elected to the United States House of Representatives. Over the next sixteen years, he became widely known for his work on behalf of federal employees, his deep commitment to protecting democratic institutions, and his efforts to modernize government operations.
One of his most impactful legislative efforts was the Federal IT Acquisition Reform Act, also known as FITARA. This law aimed to improve how the federal government acquires and manages technology, making it more efficient, transparent, and accountable. Connolly also championed the Telework Enhancement Act, which significantly expanded remote work options for federal workers. Both of these initiatives gained increased relevance during the COVID-19 pandemic, as remote work became a necessity and efficient digital systems became essential for government continuity.
Throughout his time in office, Connolly served on several key committees, including the House Oversight and Accountability Committee. He became a leading Democratic voice on issues related to government transparency and federal workforce management. His colleagues frequently praised him for his deep policy knowledge and his willingness to work across the aisle when needed.
Connolly’s illness first came to public attention in November 2024, when he announced that he had been diagnosed with esophageal cancer. Despite the news, he continued working, even while undergoing treatment. However, in April 2025, he stepped down from his committee roles due to the recurrence of the disease. At that time, he also confirmed that he would not seek re-election in 2026.
His passing comes during a period of significant transition in the House Democratic caucus. Connolly is the third Democratic lawmaker to die in recent months, following the deaths of Representatives Raúl Grijalva and Sylvester Turner. As a result, a special election will be held in 2025 to fill his seat in Virginia’s 11th District.
Among the candidates expected to run is James Walkinshaw, Connolly’s former chief of staff and a current Fairfax County supervisor. Connolly had endorsed Walkinshaw before his passing, expressing confidence in his leadership and understanding of the district’s needs.
Gerry Connolly leaves behind a lasting legacy of dedication, progress, and public service. His life reminds us of the impact that committed, principled leadership can have over time—not only in legislation but in the lives of everyday Americans.
Rest in peace, Congressman Gerry Connolly. Your work, your vision, and your service will not be forgotten.
