The humans appeared without warning, stepping out of a rift that bisected a corridor. They poured out with unexpected precision. The outpost had been scarcely used. Only a skeleton crew stood guard.

Within the space of an hour, they'd taken over, herding the station's few inhabitants into the living quarters and confining them there.

The planet rotated beneath them, as placid as always. The reports from the surface were as bland as always. Nothing about humans or anything of that nature.

No one knew what was going on. The humans, though treating us kindly, refused to elaborate on their purpose there.

The crew grew restless, of course. One cannot confine people for too long. The humans, however, seemed to outnumber us at least two to one. Tempers often flared within the living quarters.

Things grew to a head after some time. A few grabbed some household utensils to fight. They crept through the vents, intent on doing something to hurt the humans keeping us captive. We never heard shots firing or sounds of pain. They were never seen again.

Of course, this agitated us all. The humans we could see seemed agitated as well, pointing at screens and taking amongst themselves animatedly in their squeaky language.

The few who were small enough to travel the vents reported on the humans. They watched the humans scurry about as if something more was going on.

The vibrations rang through the living quarters shortly after that. A deeper thrumming that ran through our bones. Our scouts reported the humans in what seemed like a state of controlled chaos bordering on panic. The vibrations kept coming.

We all huddled in fear for a while. Nothing new at that point. Then, without warning, the vibrations stopped. Our scouts reported that the humans had calmed down, and seemed to be cleaning up.

Within hours, we had been released from our confines. The humans apologized for the treatment but never explained why. Their commander only told us that it would be better to not know before he too left through the rift that closed behind them.

We scoured through the logs left by the systems at that time. We still don't know what they were fighting.
